Every autumn, Nepal celebrates Tihar—also called Deepawali—with lights, flowers, and bright colors. For five days, homes, temples, and streets glow with oil lamps, colorful rangoli patterns, and flower garlands. This festival honors the bond between people, animals, and gods, ending with a special day for Laxmi, the goddess of wealth.

Each day has its own meaning. The first day honors crows with food offerings in the morning. The second day is for dogs, who wear flower necklaces and receive blessings for their loyalty. On the third day, cows are honored, and homes are lit with hundreds of small lamps to welcome Laxmi. The fourth day is Govardhan Puja or Mha Puja, where people pray for personal well-being. The fifth and final day, Bhai Tika, celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters through colorful rituals and garlands.

Kathmandu’s Durbar Squares come alive with cultural dances and music each night. In Mustang, traditional dancers perform in village streets, while in the southern Terai region, women sell handwoven flower garlands in small market stalls. Places like Bandipur host workshops where locals and visitors paint clay lamps together, keeping traditions alive.

If you’re planning to join, it’s best to arrive a day early so you can take part in lighting lamps and preparing for the Laxmi puja. Wear cheerful, bright colors like saffron or red, and bring sweets or flowers to share. You’re welcome to take photos, but always ask first—especially during family prayers or when photographing spiritual figures.

Tihar is more than just lights and music—it’s a beautiful invitation to join Nepali communities in warmth, kindness, and celebration. Whether you're walking through lamp-lit streets or singing with locals during Deusi-Bhailo, Tihar leaves you with memories full of color and joy.
